Today was one of those first-gorgeously-warm – we’re talking 85 degrees in the middle of April! – days of Spring that clouds your thoughts so that you can only think of Drinks on Patios and the delicious aroma of a grilled burger as you raise it up to your lips…..makes you feel like summer is just around the corner.  I got the first yen satisfied with many $4 frozen Margaritas (thank you Hell’s Kitchen – I love my neighborhood)  – and then once I made it home, my thought turned right to the burger.  I decided to call this place I’ve had my eye on – Island Burgers and Shakes – and it turned out to be *just* the thing.  Read the full article →

After-Easter Spring Salad

April 12, 2012

I feel like a dope every time it happens, but I periodically have to remind myself that a salad doesn’t HAVE to be lettuce-based.  About once a month, I’ll be figuring of what to make for dinner or lunch and think to myself, A salad would be nice…too bad I don’t have any lettuce.  But then most time (but not all, truth be told) I’ll remind myself that there are plenty of delicious salads that don’t have lettuce in them.  There’s no rule or anything saying that anything without lettuce can’t be called a salad…..and then I feel like a dope that no matter how many times I’ve had this little conversation with myself, the whole lettuce=salad=lettuce mantra is still so firmly engrained in my head.  But oh well!  At least most times I manage to think-through it and correct myself.  And today was one of those times. Ramps are one of the first wild edibles to come up in the spring….and my oh my how I love them!  The best way to describe them is like a wild leek crossed with garlic.  Onion-y, garlic-y, with a taste all their own…..anyone I’ve introduced them to has fallen under their spell.    There are only around for about six weeks, so you have to jump on it, they won’t be around come July!  I’ll be sharing a new recipe soon…but if you find some ramps and want a suggestion or two for them right away, here are two of my all-time favorite ramp recipes:  Roasted Chicken with Ramp and Potatoes and Ramp Buttermilk Biscuits.  Soooo, good!

Why not, indeed!  Not much makes me happier or more excited than $1 oysters.  So when I saw this sign outside of Millesime – the bar and restaurant inside the Carlton Hotel  – I knew my next Happy Hour (read: the very next day) would be filled with those $1 Oysters. Read the full article →

Don Antonio Pizzeria in Hell's Kitchen

As a big fan of Keste in Greenwich Village, I was pretty excited when I heard the man behind it – Roberto Caporuscio – was part of a new pizza place in my neighborhood, Hell’s Kitchen.  It’s called Don Antonio by Starita.  Antonio Starita is a third-generation pizza maestro from Naples.  So the combined efforts of Starita *and* Caporuscio?  I’m in!
